1948 followed a bad winter but our primary school still went camping. Hay filled mattresses and teachers with canes even when camping. 1950/60’s still camping, lightweight, when climbing/cycling British Isles and Europe, except for two years national service. Met Barbara when Youth Hostelling in 1961. Joined the Club when the children came along, but lapsed membership 20 years later when they went there own way without us. Rejoined the Club and this Section in 1999 with a caravan. We enjoy the music, the dancing, the spots, and being part of a good audience.

I first went camping when I was a brownie, it was cold, wet, and on a steep slope. A good few years passed before I could be persuaded to go again. In the 1970's my parents bought a caravan and everything finally clicked. Time went by, five years ago after a visit to a THS in Halsall, which just happened to be one being run by the NWFG, my husband and I joined the group. What a friendly and welcoming group of people they are.

I started caravanning 5 years ago after retiring from working as a butcher, a job I had done since leaving school. I opened my own shop in Stalybridge in June 1970 and ran it until September 2010. This of course meant no weekends off! I joined the club that year and have enjoyed all the meetings and the dancing - although I still need to practise!!

I had some experience of camping as a child and also with my own children when they were young. However a career as a nurse meant that weekends away were difficult. Two very good friends who were members of the group often talked about the good times they had, so John and I decided that when we retired, caravanning was something we would like to try.Since joining the group in 2010 we too have had some really good times. It was also our intention to visit parts of the country we had never been to, as our holidays had generally been spent abroad. .

I joined the Camping & Caravanning Club in 1979 after my sister-in-law who was a keen member recommended it. We joined the North West Folk Section a few years later after attending a holiday meet in Tywyn and being introduced to the pleasures of folk dancing. I have been married to Bob since 1963 and have a son and a daughter and also three grandsons. As well as enjoying folk dancing I am also a keen American Square Dancer. I have held the post of Secretary of the Section but had a break off the Committee for a few years.

My sister persuaded me to join the Camping & Caravanning Club in 1979. We initially camped with Ribblesdale BCC but we joined the North West Folk Section a few years later after attending a holiday meet in Tywyn and enjoying the dance sessions in the local village hall. On returning from the meet we joined a folk group near our home. I have been married to Vivienne since 1963 and have a son and a daughter and also three grandsons. I enjoy American Square Dancing as well as English folk dancing. I held the post of Treasurer of the Section for a few years and Sites Officer for a year, but came off the Committee for a few years until being elected again.

Both my husband (Len) and I have camped previously from our teenage years. When I retired in 2009 I bought our VW campervan "Scally Tart" - named after a Scouse friend who left me some money! We joined the Folk & Dance Section in 2013 and have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves ever since - with newly found like-minded group of people.

I have been married to Allan since 1960 and we have four children and five grandchildren. We joined the folk section in 1999 after staying at Penley overnight and ending up staying for a week.

Never having danced or played music before, we joined two dance clubs, Colne and Whalley and I soon started to learn the guitar until someone showed me a melodeon and I became hooked on that.

My Husband Alan and I used to camp with our four sons when they were young, and then had ten years with a VW Transporter van before getting a caravan and joining the Folk Group in 1999. After Alan died I continued caravanning and I enjoy all the interests, activities and friendship that the Folk Group offers.

I started camping as a teenager and have enjoyed staying on camps all over Britain, from Isle of Wight up to Scotland. It was great to introduce my children, Leah and Jamie, to camping too, extending our horizons exploring France, but the THS at Halsall is definitely our favourite. Being involved with the friendly Folk Section feels like being apart of an extended family.
